The Eye

It all happened last winter.
I can remember it as clearly as a piece ofstainless glass.
It was less than amonth before Christmas, and everyone was getting ready for winter break and thefinals.
It was on a rainy Friday, during5thperiod, which is right before lunch.
Everyone in my biology class seemed tired andwanted to rush out of that door as soon as the bell rings.
However, it seems that the time is not movingat all.
I loved biology, but I can notconcentrate at all that day.

Suddenly, I heard someone calling my name, “Richard?” As I woke up fromwatching the clock moving slowly, I answered quietly, “Yes Mr. Hicks?”
Mr. Hicks was my biology teacher, who is verynice and cool.
He just turned thirty theweek before, but he was bald.
His leadwas as shiny as a brand new sports car in the sun.
“Is it okay for you to work with Lia for ourcoming up lab?”
I just realized that hewas assigning lab partners for our final project of the semester.
“Yes, of course.” I said with my still sleepymind.
“What, what did he say?! Did hesay Lia?!
Oh no, what am I going to do?”I screamed to myself in astonishment.
Asudden of panic, excitement, and happiness went through my body.
Lia is the girl who I always wanted to get toknow of.
I had a major crush onher!
She is the cutest girl I have everseen.
She sits three people to the leftof me in biology.
She is very small anddelicate, but very athletic.
Her paleface and shoulder length dark hair was a perfect match.
She has a pair of warm black eyes that isfull of joy.
She always seemed as shywas me when we see each other.
When Iturned to my left to look at her, she is already smiling at me with the samejoy in her beautiful black eyes.
I smiledback, trying to remember how to breathe again.

The following Monday, we started our lab.
The lab was pig dissection.
Our mission of the lab is to make a report onthe pig, including every organ and system through out the pig.
Although Lia and I were both shy, but wemanaged to talk to each other to start our new lab.
We discussed about the basic idea of ourproject, and how we are going to start the whole thing.
The class was just about to end as weconcluded our conversation about the lab.
We are both very excited to see the final product of our project.

We worked hard for the next two weeks.
We seem less and less shy to each other.
Lia turned out to be as nice as I imagined.
She is also very smart and likes biology justlike me.
We were very close friends bythen already, but I always imagine were more than just good friends.
However, it feels like as if she is hidingsomething from me, something about her family and herself.
Also, a lot of strange things have beenhappening in that two weeks.
A lot ofthe pigs that we have been dissecting were either stolen or being bitten on theneck.
A lot of kids, including me,thought that there is no way that there would be a wolf or lion or some otherkinds of carnivorous animals on campus.
Everyone was somewhat shocked, especially thegirls, but not Lia.
It seems like Lia isnot shocked at all.
She is very calm andquiet as usual.

I didn’t suspect anything about Lia again until one day afterclass.
We had lunch after our 5thperiod biology class.
She told me to goto lunch first while she cleans up our lab.
I said, “Really, I can stay with you to finish cleaning up.”
“No, it’s okay.
You’ve been working so hard on this project,I think you should take a break.” she said in her quiet voice.
I finally said, “Alright, I’ll catch up toyou later.”
She smiled.
By then, she was the only one left in theclassroom.
After I bought my lunch, Ithought may be I should go check on her, may be she needs some help.
When I got there, I was surprised that thebiology room’s door was locked, because Mr. Hicks never locks the door duringlunch.
So then I automatically assumedthat Lia had left already.
Just when Iwas about to leave, I heard some noise inside of the room.
At first, I thought it was just myimagination, but I was sure that it was not my imagination when I heard thenoise again.
I was very anxious aboutwhat is happening inside the room.
As mycuriosity pushed me, I found a little crack between two blends of the glasswindow.
When I peeked through the narrowcrack between the blend, a strike of horror went though me from head to toe.
I was shaking.

I was still thunderstruck until some kids laughed at my shocking faceas they walked by.
I tried my best to putmy self back together again, but I was still shivering.
I gathered up all my audacity to put my eyethrough that creepy crack again.
However, I couldn’t see anything besides darkness.
I thought I was so scared that I had lost myvision.
I tried again, and this time thehole blanked!
It was the eye, the oncewarm and beautiful eye.
I was not warmanymore though, it was rather cold, as cold as ice.
She backed up from the window and I could seeher whole face by now.
Still in terror,I managed to stay at the window.
The cornerof her face was covered in the poor pig’s blood, and her shirt is stained.
Her pale face and black hair doesn’t lookthat perfect anymore; their combination looked rather diabolical.
She stared at me and I stared at her, throughthat narrow crack. It was then I realized that her eyes were full of agony andaffliction.

As Lia and I were walking to her house together three days beforeChristmas, the things she said that day after that unforgettable event kept oncoming back to my mind.
“Richard, I amso sorry about what you had to see that today.
I didn’t do it on purpose” she said with an innocent look in herbeautiful and somewhat afflicted eyes.
Ididn’t say anything; I was still staring at the spot where the poor pig hadlaid.
“I had to drink the pig’s blood soI won’t drink yours and kill you!”
Istill said nothing.
“I am avampire!
Satisfied now?
I was thirsty!
There is nothing I can do about it!
It’s either I drink the pig’s blood or yourblood!” she screamed hopelessly.
I wasdazed.
I was terrified.
I was scared.
The most of all, I felt betrayed.
Lia, the girl whom I loved, turned out to be a vampire who is thirsty formy blood!
After a long moment of deadsilence, Lia said in a calm voice, “I love you.
I didn’t want to kill you!”
Warmness rushed through my body, but I still had not said a singleword.
She put her soft lips on my, I wasscared, but we kissed.
Later that day, sheexplained to me about her family.
Theywere all vampires!
However, according toLia, they were not the kind of vampire who sucks human blood.
They sucked blood out of animals instead, sothey won’t kill humans.
I believed her, because of her persuasive eyes.
Ibelieve that she would never kill me.
BeforeI noticed, we were in front of her house.
Well, it was more like a mansion, an ancient mansion.

The next thing I knew, I was in her room.
Lia quietly shut the door behind us, but thelittle sound that the door made seemed like a thunder.
Her room was big enough for two basket courtsto fit inside.
It was as ancient as therest of her house.
The furniture was allmade out of wood that looked about more than a century old.
She smiled at me, with her warm smile asusual, but there was something more to it.
I didn’t know what it was, so I thought I was just imagining it.
I smiled back, still dazed.
Then all of a sudden, Lia’s cold lips were onmy neck.
She looked at me with herblazing eyes.
Then, her sharp vampireteeth were inside my vines.
In agony, Ithought I was going to die.
I thought Iwould never see my family and friends again.
I had loved the wrong person, vampire actually.
I was dead.

I woke up in darkness.
“Is thishell?” I asked my self in great pain.
Mywhole body was in extreme pain.
I passedout again.
I was inside pure whitesheets the next time I woke up.
I lookedaround me; I was in Lia’s room, in her bed.
I tried to get out of the bed, but I could not.
My body was still hurting.
Lia came in to check on me after a while andsaid in happiness, “Merry Christmas!”
“It’sChristmas already?
I’ve be sleeping forthree days?”
I asked in amazement.
“Yes you did.” Lia said.
Then I remembered what had happened before Ipassed out.
“What did you do to me?
What happened to me?” I asked in fury as Ilooked at my self in her mirror.
I wasshocked.
I was just like her! My skinwas as pale as the sheets that I was in.
My blue eyes had turned into deep cold black.
She had changed me.
I became one of them.
I was a filthy bloodsucker.
“Don’t you like it?” she said in excitement,“You are just like me now!
We can betogether for eternity!”
I didn’t getwhat she was saying at first, but then I realized it.
She is talking about how we can live foreverwhen we were vampires.
She changed me tomake me to stay with her forever.
Shebetrayed me because she loved me.
Ididn’t love her anymore.
In fact, I hateher, for what she did to me.
I can notsee my family anymore, ro anybody, because I will kill them.
I will not be able to control myself from thethirst, because I was a new born vampire.
She had separated me from the world, from people who I loved.
